Typically, preventive dentistry includes the exam by the dentist, taking/interpreting x-rays, cleaning and the fluoride varnish application.

Dental Exam: We examine the oral cavity (teeth, gum, soft tissue) / head & neck area

X-rays: The frequency / number of / type of x-rays depend on the individual’s case

Dental Cleaning: Removal of plaque / calculus to prevent gum disease from progressing

Fluoride varnish: Applied on teeth to prevent tooth decay

What’s the importance of preventive dentistry for seniors?

It is important to catch cavities / periodontal diseases early especially for seniors. Why?

  • when it’s at the beginning stage, we can provide gentle, non-invasive treatment option for the resident

  • if it’s gone too far, the only option may be to have dental surgery

  • if cavities / periodontal disease progresses too far, the patient may end up with a dental infection / pain and at that point, it becomes a medical emergency.

  • having a tooth extraction for seniors may be a big deal… the bone is brittle and dense and therefore the surgery is more difficult / recovery takes longer / post-op complications can arise

Evergreen Mobile Dental’s typical first visit includes comprehensive dental exam and all the necessary x-rays if the patient is able to tolerate. This first step is crucial in making sure that we try to catch cavities / periodontal disease early. Don’t wait until you see something obviously wrong with your loved ones’ oral cavity because it may be too late.
